Asset of Community Value*
Andrewsfield (part of the airfield site) was declared an ‘Asset of Community Value’ a few years ago. This gives it recognition, status and protection. Last week the Government published its draft ‘English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill’ which proposes to expand and strengthen protection of local community facilities.
The precise detail is not yet clear but there is an interesting expansion of the
definition of an Asset of Community Value’ to include sports facilities. As General
Aviation airfields are sports ground (as General Aviation in all its forms is recognised by Sport England) it looks like there may be a case for other airfields to seek such protection when needed. This may also change the position for airfields such as Wellesbourne, where Asset of Community Value’ status was sought but not approved.

*An Asset of Community Value could be a public house, a community centre, village shop or a place where people gather. The purpose is to have a system, if the Asset is under threat of sale, closure etc, to give the Community an opportunity to purchase or otherwise secure it. The extension to sports facilities may be a means of protecting the long term existence of an airfield.
